The most convenient way to do this is to start with someone you like who would make a good target reader for you. Why aren't they? What qualities are they missing out on that cause them not to be a reader of your book? For that matter maybe you're lucky and they are a reader of comparable books?
My pal's boy is really good at art so he suggested his kid might do my illustrations. Similar to the book modified by the child, how lots of books has the boy highlighted? Someone who is proficient at drawing is not always a professional artist. Put some thought into how you desire your illustrations to look. Audition some various artists.
